Raider Staff Spotlight 🔦

Each week we will feature staff members at Ridgetop so that families get to know OUR Raider family better.
Raider Staff Spotlight: Benson Cleverdon, Band Director / Music Chair.

Staff Spotlight (Mr. Cleverdon)

What is your role at Ridgetop?
- Band Director, Music Chair

What is the most unusual food you have ever eaten?
- Springbok and a C3062 battery (but not at the same time)

What is your favorite holiday tradition?
- Reading The Night Before Christmas to my kids (who might be too old now - boo!)

What is your favorite breakfast cereal and why?
- Panettone - it's cake and not cereal!

Tell us how you either LEARN, LEAD, or GROW in your life, in your personal life or as an educator.
- I learn a lot from my kids at home. Sometimes I lead and sometimes they do. We all grow together. I like to apply the same in the classroom - students owning/taking responsibility for their learning.
Raider Staff Spotlight: Paul Christian, Orchestra & Guitar Teacher, plays the violin.

Staff Spotlight (Mr. Christian)

What is your role at Ridgetop?
 - Orchestra & Guitar Teacher

What is the most unusual food you have ever eaten?
- Pretzel Jello Casserole and other strange Midwestern casseroles or hot dishes.

What is your favorite holiday tradition?
- A fire in the fireplace, a well cooked meal, and relaxing after a busy holiday season. All of my immediate family works in various music industries, so we're preparing concerts, performing, and focused through the holidays. The first day we're all done with our work is when we can finally relax and celebrate!

What is your favorite breakfast cereal and why?
- Grape-Nuts. They're weird in a good way.

Tell us how you either LEARN, LEAD, or GROW in your life, in your personal life or as an educator.
- I am so enthusiastic about music and teaching because both activities can be developed and improved year after year. There is no finish line or pinnacle of achievement -- just consistent work, results over time, and plenty of rewarding experiences along the way. I aim to be a better violinist, a better teacher, and a better friend to the people I care about, each year of my life.
Raider Staff Spotlight: Gabriela Castilleja, Choir Teacher.

Staff Spotlight (Ms. Castilleja)

What is your role at Ridgetop?
- Choir Teacher

What is the most unusual food you have ever eaten?
- Breakfast in Japan! I went to a local bakery and ordered random stuff that I thought looked good. I ate some kind of lemon croissant with green stuff in the middle. It wasn't pistachio and it wasn't matcha. I still don't know what it was, but it was delicious!

What is your favorite holiday tradition?
- Staying up until midnight and opening presents on Christmas day.

What is your favorite breakfast cereal and why?
- I don't care for breakfast cereal, but if I must choose, I would pick honey nut cheerios! They are the perfect amount of sweet and delicious.

Tell us how you either LEARN, LEAD, or GROW in your life, in your personal life or as an educator.
GROW - I grow in my life by being in a choir ensemble in my free time. I'm with the Bremerton Symphony Chorale and I love being in this group because I get to learn from my peers. Also, being in the group puts me in the same position that my students are in and I get to remember what it's like being a choir student, and hopefully that makes my teaching better too!

Kidzz Helping Kidzz Toy Drive 🧸

Thank you for all your help with this! We brought in 180 toys for this fundraiser. Great job Raiders!

New Before School Routine 🚶🏽‍♂️

We have noticed with over 830 students this year, our school can be very crowded in the morning before school starts. We are going to be starting a new routine for students when they come back from the break. They are going to learn more about it in Advocacy this week as well.

Students will have one of three options.
  • Eat breakfast (Once you are done eating, you should do one of the following below.)
  • Walk the halls
  • Go to their 1st pd class IF their teacher is there and is letting students in.

Students should not sit outside class doors or congregate in the pods/halls.

The library will also be a quiet, tech free space for students before school. Please click here to see our new Library Expectations for the before school time frame.

This new procedure will start on the Monday we come back from break and will be in effect from the time we open the halls to students at 7:05 till 7:20 when the first bell rings.

Electronics and Chromebook Usage

One of the things we are looking at as we come back from the break is our current policy around electronics (phone, earbuds) and Chromebook usage at school. We have seen how these devices can impact a student's education and we want to ensure that we are aligned with our other middle schools to continue to promote positive interaction between our students and to help them be successful Raiders.

More to come on this in the coming weeks.

Winter Break Open Gym Opportunity at Ridgetop

We’re excited to share that Mrs. Wallace will be opening up Ridgetop’s gym for Winter Open Gym on Tuesday, December 30 and Friday, January 2, from 10:30am - noon.
This supervised open gym is a great opportunity for students to get some shots up or to simply stay active and connect with peers through sports during the break.

Important: Students must be registered for “Winter Open Gym” in Final Forms prior to attending.

Only students who are signed up for this activity in Final Forms will be able to participate.

January Focus

This year, every month we are going to have a specific character focus that we are working on as a school. Each week, we will be focusing on different aspects of being a professional student.

For the month of January, we are focusing on Perseverance. We are working on setting goals and being able to stick to them. Each week we will have activities for students to work on to support this.

After School Homework Help 📚

Just a couple of reminders for students that are planning to attend this:

  • Please try to pick up your student no earlier than 3:45
  • Students should stay in the library the whole time to work on homework and get support.

Thank you! We are glad so many students are starting to utilize this resource.

Would you like to be an Adult Mentor for our students? 🙋🏼‍♂️

Ridgetop is in need of adult mentors. All it takes is 1 hour per week to make a difference in a student's life. The goal of the mentoring program is to develop positive relationships between schools and students, parents, and community.  All mentors receive training on how to support students with goal setting, and peer relationships.

Mentoring takes place on school property. Mentors may play board games, draw, practice flashcards, read, discuss grades and study habits, or just spend time talking. If this sounds like something you can do, please get in contact with our building coordinator Jeff Kahler@ jeffreyk@ckschools.org. Adult mentors make a huge difference in a youth's life.
