Families,

As we start to come into the "holiday" season, I want to say thank you for a great first couple of months of school. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to teach, mentor, and hopefully create some lasting memories for your students in middle school. I know that I am truly thankful for the opportunity to get to be a part of this school. It has been such an honor to be able to call Ridgetop "home".

I hope as we head into Thanksgiving, that whatever you are doing and whoever you are spending the holidays with, that it is a good one! Stay safe, and enjoy the time away.

Shaun Takenouchi

PS. Don't forget that Wednesday is a half day!

Upcoming Events

Raider Staff Spotlight 🔦

Each week we will feature two staff members at Ridgetop so that families get to know OUR Raider family better.
Raider Staff Spotlight featuring Kayla Frank, Assistant Principal/Athletic Director.

Staff Spotlight (Ms. Frank)

What is your role at Ridgetop?
- Assistant Principal & Athletic Director

What is the coolest thing on your bucket list?
- I really want to travel more with my husband and our family. My big dream is to make it to every continent someday - I've made it to 3 so far! Whenever I travel, I love trying new foods, learning about the culture, and getting the chance to connect with people who have different life experiences than I do. Exploring new places together brings me so much joy, and it’s a dream I’m excited to keep working toward!

What is your favorite holiday tradition?
- My favorite part of the holidays is being with my family. I come from a very large, blended family, and even with all the different pieces, everyone gets along well, which means I get to see siblings, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and family friends all season long. It can be a little hectic, too, since we sometimes end up visiting four or five houses in a single day! During winter break, my husband (who is a middle school teacher) and I like to sneak away to a cozy cabin with our dogs for a couple of days to relax and watch far too many holiday movies.

If you could hang out with any cartoon character, who would it be and why?
- Probably Scooby-Doo and the whole Mystery Inc. crew. Solving goofy mysteries, running into hijinks, and always ending the day with the group safe, the bad guy caught, and everyone laughing together sounds like a pretty great time.

Tell us how you either LEARN, LEAD, or GROW in your life, in your personal life or as an educator.
I learn something new every single day, both inside and outside of school. Being a lifelong learner is a big part of why I feel so passionate about working in education. Since this is my first year at Ridgetop, I’m growing a lot in my role and getting to know what makes this community so special: the people, the care we show one another, and the commitment to lifting each other up.

I also believe it's important not to get too comfortable or assume you have all the answers. Things, and people, are always changing. I try to honor my own growth and the growth of those around me, while also pushing myself to keep learning because that’s what our students, staff, and the people in my life deserve. It’s also what makes life more exciting! That constant learning and reflection is a big part of how I try to lead.

Staff Spotlight (Mrs. Smallwood)

What is your role at Ridgetop?
- Assistant Principal

What is the coolest thing on your bucket list?
- I would like to build a really cool treehouse!

What is your favorite holiday tradition?
- One of my neighbors goes all out for many holidays, filling their yard with inflatables and other special items. Taking walks past their house brings me so much joy and glee. My children love it, too; we've even used it as the background to a holiday card we shared with all our friends and family one winter. And I might do it again! Hope they don't mind...

If you could hang out with any cartoon character, who would it be and why?
- Bluey (and family!)

Tell us how you either LEARN, LEAD, or GROW in your life, in your personal life or as an educator.
Collaborating with others, listening to different perspectives than my life experience has afforded me, and working together on a mission or task that serves others is my favorite way to learn, lead, and grow, both personally and professionally. In our home, instead of talking about "what they want to be when they grow up", I talk to my babes about how "they are going to make the world a better place."

Resources for Families

We handed this Resources document out during conferences, but in case you didn't get it or need it again. Below are links to our district community resource page, along with different languages as well.

December Focus

This year, every month we are going to have a specific character focus that we are working on as a school. For the month of September, we are focusing on Professional Student. Each week, we will be focusing on different aspects of being a professional student.

For the month of December, we are focusing on compassion. We are working on caring for others and being able to support others in our Raider Family.

Free Thanksgiving Meal 🍽️

Poulsbo First Lutheran Church has let us know they will be hosting a free Thanksgiving Dinner on November 27th, open to anyone who would like to join.

The meal will be served from 2–4 PM on Thanksgiving Day, with both dine-in and take-out options available. You’re welcome to register using the link below, but it’s not required at all—drop-ins are completely welcome.

This event isn’t sponsored by CKSD or Ridgetop, but it is a wonderful community offering at no cost, and we’re grateful to be able to pass it along.

After School Homework Help 📚

Just a couple of reminders for students that are planning to attend this:

  • Please try to pick up your student no earlier than 3:45
  • Students should stay in the library the whole time to work on homework and get support.

Thank you! We are glad so many students are starting to utilize this resource.

PTA News

We have got a couple of upcoming PTSA events. The first one is the Family Lunch Day on Tuesday, 11/25. The second one is our Reflections contest. Would love to see as many families on Tuesday as possible! These are both such great events. Huge thank you to our PTSA for putting both of these on!

Would you like to be an Adult Mentor for our students? 🙋🏼‍♂️

Ridgetop is in need of adult mentors. All it takes is 1 hour per week to make a difference in a student's life. The goal of the mentoring program is to develop positive relationships between schools and students, parents, and community.  All mentors receive training on how to support students with goal setting, and peer relationships.

Mentoring takes place on school property. Mentors may play board games, draw, practice flashcards, read, discuss grades and study habits, or just spend time talking. If this sounds like something you can do, please get in contact with our building coordinator Jeff Kahler@ jeffreyk@ckschools.org. Adult mentors make a huge difference in a youth's life.
