Annual Asbestos Notification

In compliance with the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act of 1988 (AHERA), a copy of CKSD’s Asbestos Management Plan is available in the main office of each school. A master copy is available in the Grounds, Maintenance, and Custodial Office.

During the 2019-20 school year, asbestos abatement was conducted at the old Central Kitsap High School and Seabeck Elementary School in preparation for demolition. Both buildings were demolished except for the 900 wing at CK High School and the detached gym at Seabeck.

The AHERA building inspections, which are required to be done every three years, were conducted during the summer of 2019. AHERA Management plans were updated during 2019-2020 as well.

Anticipated projects for the 2020-21 school year include the required six-month periodic surveillances, which will be conducted during the winter and summer breaks.

During 2020-21, Olympic High School will undergo abatement in the old Unit 1 (classroom wing) and Unit 3 (gym/locker rooms/pool) areas in preparation for modernization. The 900 wing of the old CK High School may undergo abatement this year, but the starting date of this project has not yet been determined.

Questions about asbestos abatement and AHERA compliance may be directed to Sidney Winters, Environmental Specialist, Maintenance Department, 360-662‐8299.
